El arte de saber ver. Manuel B. Cossío, la Institución Libre de Enseñanza y el Greco

[2016]

Edited by SALVADOR GUERERO

This monography entitled El arte de saber ver. Manuel B. Cossío, la Institución Libre de Enseñanza y el Greco, published after the homonymous exhibition organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE), gathers up a collection of essays destined to analyze the career of the art historian and pedagogue Manuel B. Cossío (1857-1935), who was an outstanding figure of his time.

The sentence «el arte de saber ver» (“the art of knowing how to see”), which was formulated by Cossío in 1879, works as a link among the thirteen articles that are signed by many specialists, such as Salvador Guerrero and Javier Portús (that are commissioner and scientific adviser, respectively, of the exhibition), Eugenio Otero Urtaza, Sofía Rodríguez Bernis, Javier Barón, Bonaventura Bassegoda, Eric Storm or Javier Moreno Luzón among others. Cossío’s intellectual project in relation to the ILE is approached in these articles and special attention is paid to his book about El Greco (1908), key to understand the value given to the painter from Toledo in the Europe during the first third of the Twentieth Century. Additionally, Cossío’s journeys are also investigated together with his rating of popular arts, Joaquin Sorolla’s relationships with the ILE, school outings to the Museo del Prado, Cossío’s relationships with other intellectuals, such as Josep Pijoan, Gregorio Marañón, Julián Besteiro or the Marquis de la Vega-Inclán, and his connection with historic avant-garde movements through the “Orden de Toledo”, among other things.

This edition also provides a special corpus of more than three hundred images of the main works displayed in the exhibition among which you will find works by el Greco, Aureliano de Beruete, Joaquín Sorolla, Maurice Fromkes, Ignacio Zuloaga, José Moreno Villa, Salvador Dalí o Juan Bonafé. A compilation of the most relevant texts by Cossío and other intellectuals such as Julius Meier-Graefe, John B. Trend, Américo Castro, José Moreno Villa, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Miguel de Unamuno, Alberto Jiménez Fraud or Enrique Lafuente Ferrari and Juan López-Morillas was also included.
