La voz de Jaime Sabines

[2010]

With the sponsorship of the Fundación Autor and the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores

The 14th volume of the collection Poetry at the Residence is dedicated to the Mexican poet Jaime Sabines (Chiapas, 1926 - Mexico City, 1999) and presents the poetry reading offered by the poet at the Residencia de Estudiantes on December, 12, 1997. Sabines explores his repertoire in chronological order, from the poem "Lento, amargo animal “ (“Slow, bitter animal",) which can be considered as his cardinal work, to some of the poems of the series dedicated to his father , “Algo sobre la muerte del Mayor Sabines” ("Something about the Death of Major Sabines") -read for the first time in public- , and including works from almost all of his books. The volume includes a CD with a recording of the reading, as well as a transcription, a brief biographical outline and a bibliography of the poems.

Jaime Sabines began studying medicine but abandoned that program to immerse himself in literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where he graduated with a degree in Spanish Language and Literature. Among his many works, it is worth highlighting Horal (1950), La señal (The signal, 1951), Adán y Eva (Adam and Eve, 1952), Tarumba (Crazy, 1956), Yuria (1967), Maltiempo (Bad weather, 1972), Algo sobre la muerte del Mayor Sabines (Something about the death of Major Sabines, 1973), Uno es el hombre (One is a man,1990) and the new collection Nuevo recuento de poemas (New telling of poems, 1977). His body of work is marked by an informal voice which defines him as a timeless poet of the people. In 1972, Sabines received the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize and in 1983, the National Award for Arts and Sciences in Linguistics and Literature. For his book Pieces of Shadow (Fragmentos de sombra), an anthology of his poetry tranlsated to English and presented in a bilingual version, Sabines was awarded the Mazatlán Literature Prize in 1995.
