Luis Cernuda. Álbum
Biografía por James Valender

[2002]

Iconography by LUIS MUÑOZ

Luis Cernuda. Álbum initiates a new collection devoted to illustrated biographies of some of the most significant names in Spanish contemporary culture. James Valender wrote Cernuda’s biography, following his life and literary career from his birth in Seville, 1902, until his death in the Mexican house of Concha Méndez in 1963: his university years, the lectureship in Toulouse, the arrival in Madrid and his contacts with the poets of his generation, his work with the Misiones Pedagógicas, the Civil War, his exile in Great Britain, his stay in the United States and finally the recovery of Spanish daily experience in Mexico.

Luis Muñoz has selected the illustrations, many unpublished material including photographs of the poet, and places he visited, manuscripts, letters, portraits, book covers, periodicals and newspapers articles, and his working diary.

James Valender interviewed Paloma Altolaguirre, daughter of the poets Manuel Altolaguirre and Concha Méndez, and his nephew Ángel Yanguas Cernuda, who talked about the family environment.

The book also has illustrations, names and works indices, and a brief bibliography. Andrés Trapiello and Alfonso Meléndez are the designers of this stunning collection and have used Gallimard’s La Pléiade as model, a reference in European publications for forty years.
