If one were to define the 1920’s and 30’s might have to rely on a certain cliché, that, in this case, however, seems to be appropriate: it was the time of the great voyages of modern times. In fact, if the end of the 19th century and, above all, the beginning of the 20th century, saw the first modern expeditions - from the American anthropological and archaeological travels to Shackleton’s proposal to explore the South Pole - the 20’s and 30’s strengthened the passion for knowing more about “the other," in time and space, and to reach those places that few had visited before.

Many of these people who expanded our knowledge, the mythical figures of knowledge, went to the Residencia de Estudiantes to share their fundamental contributions, adding an element of "international knowledge" that is basic to understand the educational task that the Residencia was pursuing.

Nine lectures have been selected for the exhibition and its catalog. They covered the areas that constituted the essence of "knowledge" in those years, such as archeology, anthropology, natural sciences or geography, from Carter and Tutankhamen to Woolley and Ur, Obermaier and Altamira, Frobenius and Africa, Hackin and Pelliot in Asia, Bruce and the Everest, Joyce and the Mayan culture, and Francisco Iglesias’ project for a scientific expedition to the Amazon. The exhibition catalog includes several general articles and specific essays on each expedition written by experts in the field. It also includes some of the original lectures. It is illustrated with numerous contemporary photographs of the expeditions, handwritten notes, drawings, etc.
