The Boletín Oficial del Estado and the Residencia de Estudiantes aim to contribute with this publication to the celebration of the four hundredth anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes. The facsimile of this work is a unique tribute made by Azorín, who was very devoted to the author of Don Quixote.

The first edition of the book entitled El licenciado Vidriera visto por Azorín was published in 1915 by the Residencia de Estudiantes. It was included in its publications just when the three hundredth anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes was about to be celebrated. Azorín dedicated the book to Francisco Giner de los Ríos, who had died a few months before its publication. Quoting Azorín, he had been “a master who had left a trail of light”.

Azorín’s reinterpretation of El licenciado Vidriera, which is one of the most famous works included in Novelas ejemplares, is also a personal reflection on intellectual nature. According to what Alfonso Reyes wrote in August 1915, not long after the publication, Azorín believed it to be his “best book. Perhaps because of the remarkable technical effort to achieve simplicity: there are some pages in which the words cannot even be felt”.

This new edition is complemented with an introduction made by the professor José-Carlos Mainer that enlightens Azorín’s text, which is another reason to celebrate its apparition and recovery.
