The work of the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas, the JAE (Board for Advanced Studies and Scientific Research) played a major part in Spain's entry into modernity. Founded in 1907 and inspired by the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, (Free Institution of Education) the JAE established an extensive network of research centers in the sciences, humanities, education, and culture, and created a fellowship program system that allowed Spanish researchers to study abroad and establish contact with the new scientific developments in prestigious institutions around the world. Among the Board’s members there were outstanding scientists and artists such as Santiago Ramón y Cajal, chairman until 1934, Ramón Menéndez Pidal, Blas Cabrera, Enrique Moles, Severo Ochoa, Juan Negrín, José Ortega y Gasset, Alberto Jiménez Fraud, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Francisco Grande Covián , and Miguel Catalan, among others, as well as José Castillejo, secretary and soul of the JAE. All of them are present in these pages, where their accomplishments and projects are placed in perspective compared with equivalent initiatives around the world. The articles gathered here offer a kaleidoscopic and cosmopolitan view of this outstanding enterprise, perhaps the greatest effort ever made in Spain to enhance scientific and general knowledge.
