“If it were possible to define in one sentence Cernuda’s place in modern poetry in our language, I would say he is the poet who speaks not for all of us, but for every one that each of us is.” Those were Octavio Paz’s words in a prophetic essay written in 1964. The fact is that Luis Cernuda (1902-1963) did not get the support and understanding he expected from his contemporaries. It was only after his death in Mexico that readers began to appreciate his work, because they find in it something unique: a relentless reflection on the creative process and its impact on the difficult vocation of the poet.
