Gumersindo de Azcárate
[2017]
Editor Gonzalo Capellán
Gumersindo de Azcárate (León, 1840-Madrid, 1917) was one of the most notorious intellectuals of the XXth century. Jurist, philosopher, historian, writer, politician, professor and academic, in all these fields he was able to combine his professional work –that he started in 1861 as lawyer of the Dirección General de los Registros– with an active participation in numerous initiatives related to his constant concern with social and educative problems, among them the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, of which he was one of the founders in 1876 and its dean after Giner’s death in 1915; the Fundación Sierra-Pambley, to whose creation he contributed in 1887 and whose board he led since 1915; the Instituto de Reformas Sociales and the Asociación para la Enseñanza de la Mujer, that he directed since 1903 and 1904, respectively; or the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas, of which he was vice-president since its creation in 1907.
In Minuta de un testamento, book that is halfway through personal diary, literary testament and historical text, Gumersindo de Azcárate advocates a plural and inclusive society in which the diversity of tasks, beliefs and opinions are accepted. It constitutes a proposal of a model of society governed by a strict ethical code, where integrity and the moral rectitude imbue every life aspect: politics, administration, education or economy.
