Las lecciones de las cosas
Luis Mateo Díez

[2012]

Co-edited by the Fundación Sierra-Pambley and the Fundación Francisco Giner de los Rios [Institución Libre de Enseñanza]

To mark the 125th anniversary of the Fundación Sierra-Pambley, held in 2012, this novella by Luis Mateo Díez has been published through the joint efforts of three institutions which were closely linked since its inception: the Fundación Francisco Giner de los Rios [Institución Libre de Enseñanza], the Residencia de Estudiantes and the Fundación Sierra-Pambley.

It tells the journey that Francisco Giner de los Rios, Manuel B. Cossío and Gumersindo de Azcárate did a cold November day in 1885 to Villablino (Leon). Francisco Sierra Pambley, a landowner who had invited them to his house was looking for help to set up an institution to which he had decided to donate his fortune. The story recreates the talks held on what would turn out to be the Sierra-Pambley Foundation, that opened free schools in several towns of Leon and Zamora and involved the extension to that region of the pedagogical model of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza. The project achieved a record of literacy in the region and enhanced the creation of a flourishing industry.
