Los colegios del exilio en México
Edición de José Ignacio Cruz
[2005]
With the sponsorship of Caja Duero
This exhibit, organized by the Residencia de Estudiantes, tells the story of the massive influx of Spanish refugees into Mexico after the Civil War, and the schools they established for their children.
These schools introduced in Mexico the pedagogical principles of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, the leading force behind the educational reform undertaken by the government of the Second Spanish Republic. They were very successful and still teach thousands of Mexican children who, by a twist of fate, celebrate the proclamation of the Second Republic and sing its anthem with enthusiasm every year.
In the first section of the catalog there are essays dealing with various aspects of Republican education in general and the colegios del exilio in particular. In the second section, the pupils, now adults, recollect with emotion their experience.
This exhibit recounting the vicissitudes of thousands of exiles forced to rebuilt their lives after the war is proof of the Residencia’s commitment to recover the historical memory of those times.
