El coro de Babel. Las actividades culturales de la Residencia de Estudiantes
Álvaro Ribagorda
[2011]
The Residencia de Estudiantes, unlike other cultural centers of the first decades of the twentieth century, fully responded to the call of Europe and became a center for the dissemination of the main currents of thought and the latest trends in Western culture whose main figures came to its auditorium, including Albert Einstein, Le Corbusier, Marie Curie, Paul Valéry, José Ortega y Gasset, Henri Bergson, Igor Stravinsky, Alexander Calder, Miguel de Unamuno, Walter Gropius, Maurice Ravel, and J. M. Keynes.
Thanks to Alvaro Ribagorda detailed narrative about nearly six hundred of the cultural activities that took place at the Residencia between 1910 and 1936, the reader will learn about those conferences, courses, lectures, concerts, films and plays that made its auditorium "a small choir of a uniquely cosmopolitan Babel." The reader will learn, for example, how the activities were financed, how they invited figures such H. G. Wells, Einstein and Bergson, the preparations that were made before their arrival, the interest with which these events were followed by the Madrid press and society, how Buñuel created the first Spanish avant-garde film club, or the scandal that the interventions by Marinetti and the French surrealists caused.
