This catalog of the exhibition at the Residencia de Estudiantes commemorating Luis Buñuel’s birth centenary offers a comprehensive analysis of the personal and professional life of the film- maker from Aragon, one of the Residencia’s most prominent alumnus.

This volumes explores his cultural environment, the Spanish avant-garde of the first third of the twentieth century, the Surrealist Paris, Mexico and the Spanish exiles, and Spain’s artistic and intellectual renewal in the 1960’s.

Among the contributors are the leading experts on Buñuel: Juan José Vázquez, the exhibit’s curator, Agustín Sánchez Vidal, who writes about Buñuel’s relevance today, despite some views from critics trying to play down his role. José-Carlos Mainer, Juan Manuel Bonet, Juan Manuel Díaz de Guereñu and Andrés Soria deal with aspects of Buñuel’s early stages of his life and his ties with Ramón Gómez de la Serna, the Ultraísmo and Creacionismo movements, and the Residencia de Estudiantes.

Essays by José Pierre, Emilio Sanz de Soto, Emmanuel Guigon, Javier Herrera Navarro, Chus Tudelilla, Horacio Fernández and Pedro García Buñuel are also included.

The catalog reproduces the paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures in the exhibition and some unpublished letters from León Sánchez Cuesta’s archives now kept in the Residencia de Estudiantes.
