The Institución Libre de Enseñanza, since it was founded in 1876, insisted to recover artisan, the folklore, music and popular literature and it was a pioneer in the inclusion of the music and the scholar singing program. The institutions that have collaborated with the preparation of this song book still share this tradition, where music has a privileged place and, with this book they want to contribute to preserve and spread this appreciated musical heritage.

The book, edited by Victor Pliego de Andrés, History of Music professor in the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, has a CD with 28 popular songs of the repertory of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (such as Los cuatro muleros, Romance del conde Olinos, Eres alta y delgada o Ya se van los pastores) with the voices of the Pequeños Cantores of the JORCAM, a choir of children from 6 to 15 years old. It is possible to buy the CD with the book or separately.
