Rafael Múgica. Los dibujos de Gabriel Celaya
[1996]
Co-published with the Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea
This volume revealed a facet of Gabriel Celaya’s talent hitherto unknown to the public: the artwork he did between 1927 and 1935, when he lived at the Residencia de Estudiantes and studied industrial engineering.
It uncovered a period of Celaya’s life when he was immersed in the creative, avant-garde environment of the Residencia. He was still undecided about which of his two great passions, poetry and painting, he would pursue.
The catalog brought together for the first time a selection of oil and wax paintings, and gouaches, signed as Rafael, Celaya’s first name.
Josefina Alix wrote an essay on his artwork, and Juan Pérez de Ayala compiled an illustrated chronology capturing this unique period.
The volume also included a selection of poems written by Celaya during those years and some of his unpublished writings, as well as an appendix of his correspondence with Emilio Prados.
