Carmen de Zulueta (Madrid, 1916 - New York, 2010) studied at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza and the Instituto-Escuela before she began her Philosophy and Letters university degree. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War she was in Rome, where her father, Luis Zulueta, was ambassador to the Vatican.

The family went into exile, first to England, France and eventually Colombia. She completed her university degree in Bogotá and got a grant to continue her studies in the United States, where she still lives. She taught Spanish Language and Literature at Harvard, and the City University of New York (CUNY) for two decades.

The critical edition Cartas desde prisión de Julián Besteiro (Madrid, Alianza, 1988), Ni convento ni college: La Residencia de Señoritas (Madrid, Publicaciones de la Residencia de Estudiantes, 1993), Compañeros de Paseo (Sevilla, Renacimiento, 2001) and her autobiography, La España que pudo ser: memorias de una institucionista republicana (Murcia, Universidad de Murcia, 2000) are among her publications.

With the Institución Libre de Enseñanza as intellectual background, Zulueta recalled her experiences with well-known figures: Inge Morath and her husband, playwright, Arthur Miller, the scientist José Castillejo Duarte, the diplomat Luis Villalba, Dr. Juan Negrín Mijailov and Isabel García Lorca. She paid especial attention to her father and to her uncle, Julián Besteiro, who played an important role in her childhood. Madrid, London, Paris, Bogota, Boston and New York are the stages of her personal story.
