Juan Gutiérrez Gili

[2005]

Juan Gutiérrez Gili (Irún, 1894- Barcelona, 1939) is a writer virtually unknown to most historians of Literature. Author of two books of poetry that had some echo, he was a member of avant-garde movements such as Ultraísmo and Creationismo. He wrote plays influenced by those movements: they are nurtured by elements of de-humanized art and classical theatre forms, such as farce and pantomime.

This monograph is a thorough analysis of those plays in the avant-garde movement context. It is also a critical edition of the plays, with samples of the rich and intense correspondence he had with Juan Ramón Jiménez, Gregorio Martínez Sierra, Guillermo de Torre and Rafael Barradas.

JAVIER HUERTA CALVO is professor of Spanish Literature at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid. He previously taught in the University of Amsterdam. He specializes in classical and contemporary theater and has published more than a hundred and fifty works.

EMILIO PERAL VEGA is professor of Spanish Literature at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid. His research has focused on contemporary theater and has published works on Benavente, Valle-Inclán, Lorca and Blanco Amor.
