La Residencia de Estudiantes. Los residentes
Margarita Sáenz de la Calzada

[2011]

The Residencia de Estudiantes was the first cultural center in Spain, since its inception in 1910 until 1936, and one of the most lively and fruitful centers for creativity and exchange of scientific and artistic movements in Europe between the two World Wars.

Margarita Saénz de la Calzada, daughter and niece of former residents, reconstructs in this book the history of the Residencia de Estudiantes using the direct testimony of former residents whom she interviewed or corresponded with. The book traces the origins of the Residencia and evokes the intellectual atmosphere breathed therein, the daily lives of residents around the Moorish-style pavilions, the Poplar Hill, the activity of the laboratories and the lectures and courses delivered in the auditorium. She also narrates the fate of the institution after the Civil War and the initiatives that former residents put in place to keep alive “the spirit of the house.” Their "life experiences" are, in the words of the author herself, " examples of the comprehensive education of the person that Giner and Cossío taught. "

This volume is lavishly illustrated with contemporary photographs, many of them unpublished before, which reflect in all its vividness the spirit of the most unique educational project developed in Spain during the first half of the twentieth century.
