BORES. MADRID-PARÍS, 1898-1972

“I started to collaborate with the modest magazines of the Ultraist movement,
which was the origin of most of the poetic experiences in Spain between 1920-1930.
I felt in that moment the urgent need for renovation, and finally convinced
that I had to break somewhere, I resolved to leave for Paris”.
(Francisco Bores, “Propos de l’artiste”, 1957)

Published fifty years after the death of Francisco Bores (1898-1972) and following the exhibition that the Residencia de Estudiantes dedicates to him, this catalogue offers a tour of the painter’s trajectory and the relationship he had with his generational colleagues, who were so connected with the historical Residencia de Estudiantes, both in Madrid, where Bores took his first steps in the artistic world, as well as in Paris, where from 1925 onwards he would take part in the so-called School of Paris.

The book shows how, according to Juan Manuel Bonet, the “most notable of the painters of what we could call the Parisian 27” was the most influential and the one that achieved the earliest relevance and prestige in the international scene. Since 1922 Bores’ work had been involved in the avant-gardist renovation of the Madrid of the time, where he participated in the Exhibition of the Iberian Artists Society in 1925. Following his move to Paris in the summer of that same year he joined, progressively but intensely, the artistic scene of the French capital, where his work gained excellence until it became a classic in contemporary art. This had been already announced by Juan Ramón Jiménez in El Sol in 1931: “if he finally unites and merges eternal impressionism and cubism, he will be (…) eternal light, permanent, classical”.
