Luis Cernuda. Epistolario, 1924 - 1963
Edición de James Valender

[2003]

Luis Cernuda’s work received a well-deserved attention in 2002, year of his birth centenary, but his correspondence was lacking. James Valender has collected his letters from 1924, when the poet was still living in his native Seville, to 1963, a few days before his death in Mexico.

There are 1.103 letters, 978 written by Cernuda to Federico García Lorca, Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Alfonso Reyes, Jorge Guillén, Gerardo Diego, Vicente Aleixandre and José Lezama Lima, among others. There are 384 unpublished letters addressed to Juan Ramón Jiménez, Pedro Salinas, José Bergamín, Concha Méndez , Manuel Altolaguirre, Rafael Martínez Nadal, León Sánchez Cuesta, Ramón Gaya and Concha de Albornoz.

This correspondence deals with poetry, political concerns and intimate thoughts. The letters are essential for a better understanding of the historical and literary environment of the writer and his complex personality.

James Valender, professor of Literature at El Colegio de México, wriote a thorough introductory essay and the foot notes to the letters. The edition includes source and names indexes, and facsimile reproductions of the most significant letters.
